RESUMO

The data obtained in this study represent a comprehensive assessment of human exposure to metal(loids) enriched in the environment, derived from metallurgical activities in Cedral, a town in North-Central Mexico. A multi-elemental analysis (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Sb) shows high metal(loid) content in environmental media (tailings samples, dust samples and particulate matter < 2.5 µm collected in the urban area). Blood samples from school-age children were collected and analyzed to determine exposure levels. The assessment of the data obtained from this study shows that Sb and Cd are highly enriched elements in the environment of Cedral; their respective levels in the blood samples analyzed are 10.9 and 11.3 times higher than their pediatric reference levels. The statistical analysis indicates a strong relationship between metal(loid)s in blood samples and both dust and PM2.5 samples, which reveal that ingestion and inhalation could represent important exposure routes for metal(loid) intake. Continuous monitoring in the area is paramount to assess the health impact posed by the different routes of exposure. It is also important to implement health education programs to decrease the population's exposure to metal(loid)s and to design urgent remediation measures, to be implemented as soon as possible.

Adverse effects of lead (Pb) on human health are observed even at levels below 5 µg/dL, affecting principally the children population and suggesting that there is not a safe exposure level. The determination of Pb isotopic ratios (LIRs) in biological and environmental samples, is an appropriate tool to track and control the exposure sources, because LIRs constitutes the pollutant's isotopic signature and hence can be used to identify sources of Pb emission. This study proposes the optimization of a method in order to significantly reduce the biological samples' matrix interferences, and improves precision and accuracy in the measurements of LIRs. Four total blood digestion methods were evaluated and the results were subjected to statistical methods (ANOVA) determining the combination of HNO3:H2O2 (2:1 v v-1)/g from a sample on a hot plate as the best of them. For the method's validation, detection and quantification limits, linearity range, intermediate precision and recovery were evaluated. The total Pb (PbT) and LIRs were performed by ICP-QMS, defining the optimal value of detector dead time (DT), and correcting mass bias and instrumental drift for this matrix. LIRs based on 206Pb, 207Pb and 208Pb were determined at high precision (%RSD 0.03-0.49%), than those involving 204Pb (%RSD > 0.8). The optimized methodology can be used to identify pollution sources in blood and environmental samples using LIRs (206Pb/207Pb, 207Pb/208Pb, 208Pb/206Pb, etc.) in a trustworthy and simple way, with accurate results.

The current study aimed at quantifying arsenic and lead in feathers from three passerine species that are residents from areas exposed to mining activities (Toxostoma curvirostre, Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus, and Melozone fusca). Lead and As contents in bird feathers and in superficial soil samples were measured with AAS. Levels of these metals were compared between sites exposed and unexposed to mining. Possible correlations of As and Pb between superficial soil and bird feathers were also investigated. Soil metal concentrations were significantly higher near mining sites, and metal concentrations in bird feathers showed a behavior similar to those recorded for soil samples. Individual birds from polluted sites had higher mean feather metal concentrations in comparison with non-polluted sites; no differences in metal concentrations were recorded among bird species. This work constitutes a basis for monitoring contaminants, and for future toxicological studies attempting to understand the impact that some mining activities may have on bird populations.
